Website Jargon Buster
We're web design experts, and sometimes we use some word or phrase that the other 99.999% of the world hasn't a clue what it means... here's a list of some of the more common ones:
| POP3 | POP3 is an incoming email server (POP stands for "Post Office Protocol"). When someone sends you an email, it sits on your incoming email server until you pick it up using, for example, Outlook Express. |
| SMTP | SMTP is an outgoing email server. When you send an email it goes out through an outgoing email server. Most people will be able to use their ISP's outgoing email server, but some people may need a dedicated SMTP server which we can provide. |
| SEO | Search Engine Optimisation - the process of organising your site's structure and contents, and other external factors to best ensure the search engines return your website higher up the natural search engine rankings |
| PPC | Pay-per-click - also called "Sponsored Links" or "Search Engine Marketing". The adverts that surround the search engine results page which are shown when a searcher types in a specific phrase or word - for example, Google Adwords. Called Pay-per-click as you only pay when someone clicks on the advert. |
| Hosting | Your website is "hosted" on a web server in order to be shown on the internet. We typically use shared hosting where many websites are stored on the same server - this is perfectly fine for most web sites. |
